T-Shirt Yarn Rug-Free Crochet Pattern

I love working with T-shirt yarn and it's perfect for making this chunky 'granny rectangle' rug. Working with T-shirt yarn can be a bit tricky (and a work out for the arms!) but the results are really effective. The yarn can vary slightly in thickness so try not to worry too much about tension, just be as consistent as possible, embrace the imperfections with this project and enjoy making your own unique rug. This simple variation on the basic granny square is super fun to make and works up really fast. You can use as many or as few colours as you like to make your version really unique

Finished rug measures approx. 25x29 inches, simply continue adding more rows to make a bigger size

You will need:

240 metres of t shirt yarn. I used 2 of the Hoooked Zpagetti solids in Grey and Vineyard Green which was just enough to make the rug and 10 tassels

A 9mm hook

Scissors and a smaller hook to weave in the ends

Something to wrap the yarn around to make tassels, I used a DVD case to make 5 inch tassels, a book or piece of card would work great

Abbreviations (written in UK terms):

Ch=chain

Trb=treble crochet

Ss=slip stitch

Htrb=half treble crochet

St=stitch

1. Make a magic circle and work all stitches into the ring (or ch 4 and ss to  1st ch to make a ring)   ch3, 2 trb, ch 2, 3 trb, ch 2, 3 trb, ch 1, 3 trb, ch 2, 3 trb, ch 2, 3 trb, ch 1, ss to top of ch 3 to join.

2. ch 4 (counts as the 1st tr and ch 1) 3 trb in next ch 2 corner space, ch 2, 3 trb in same space, ch 1, 3 trb in corner, ch 2, 3 trb in same corner, ch 1, 3 trb in ch 1 space, ch 1, 3 trb in corner, ch 2, 3 trb in same corner, ch 1, 3 trb in last corner, ch 2, 3 trb in same corner, ch 1, 2 trb in ch 1 space, ss to 3rd chain of the ch 4 to join

3. ch 3(counts as the 1st trb) 2 trb in ch 1 space, 3 trb in corner, ch 2, 3 trb in same corner, continue working clusters of 3 trebles with chain 1 in between, remember to work and additional cluster of 3 trebles in each corner space with a chain2 in between. End on a chain1 and ss to top of ch 3 to join

4-9 continue working in this pattern to create a rectangle alternate between working a starting chain 4 (ending by joining to the 3rd chain) and starting chain 3 which ends on a chain 1 and ss to top of the chain 3
At the end of row 9, when working the last treble, change colour by completing the stitch with the new yarn (yarn over as normal, insert hook, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over with new yarn and pull through 2 loops. You can then work over ends or weave in later.
10-13 continue in the same pattern, work 2 rows in green, then 1 grey and 1 more green
14. ch 1, htrb in each st and ch 1 space around, at the corner ch 2 work 2 htrb in each chain, ss to 1st htrb to join, fasten off and weave in ends

Use a smaller hook to help weave in the ends, I used a 3.5mm

Make 10x 5 inch tassels. I made 6 in green and 4 in the grey, with the grey I tied the top of the tassel with the green yarn so it doesn't show in the row 14 when attached

I wrapped the yarn around a dvd case width ways 15 times then cut the yarn along the bottom of the case. Tie yarn tightly around the middle of the strands (use these 2 strands to tie the tassel onto the rug later) smooth all the strands down and tie another piece of yarn about an inch down from the top of the tassel. Trim the tassels to make them all the same length.

Simply tie the tassels, evenly spaced, to the stitches of row 14 and weave in the ends

All done!

Plant pot covers-free crochet pattern

This quick little make is a great use for any leftover bits of t shirt or chunky yarn. I used the Hoooked ribbon and zpagetti yarns to make these cute little gifts for my little boy's pre-school teachers. The pattern would suit any yarn that has a small amount of stretch in it and it's really simple to adapt. I've made these using paintbox yarns chunky acrylic too and it works perfectly! You will need: Just a small amount of yarn and a hook size to match (with the t shirt or ribbon yarn I use 9mm or chunky acrylic with a 6mm) a small plant pot. Granny Square Purse Tutorial

This is a super quick and fun make using any granny square pattern you like. It’s a great way of using up any yarns scraps you have and would work well using lots of different types of yarn. I used knitcraft cotton blend yarn from hobbycraft with a 4mm hook but you could use any yarn and hook size to suit. Simply make a 7 round granny square using your preferred method or use the pattern below. I wanted to use quite a solid square. You’ll then finished with a row of double crochet and sew. Change colour after each row if you like, just remember to work over your yarn tails as you go to save time weaving in all those ends later. You will need: Cotton blend yarn in 4 colours. I used purple, hot pink, mustard and teal 4mm hook 1 button In UK terms: Rnd1. Make a magic ring and chain 3 (equals 1 treble crochet stitch throughout)  3x treble crochet, chain 2 (4 trebles, chain 2) x3, slip stitch to top of chain 3 to join then fasten off Rnd2-7.
