I’m so excited to share that I was recently asked to join the Brand Ambassador team for King Cole Yarns . Myself and the team will be sharing info on new releases, patterns and inspiration and showcasing some of the lovely yarns available...Starting with the gorgeous new Stripe DK range
I was lucky enough to be sent all 6 colours of the range to try out and was immediately drawn to the Red Stripe option with hints of pale pink, cream and red.
Striped DK is a lovely soft acrylic yarn with a beautiful self striping pattern, making it perfect for versatile clothing and accessories.
I wanted to show off those stripes with a classic knit stitch cowl. The Tunisian Crochet knit stitch creates a lovely solid fabric but with plenty of stretch and drape. You could also achieve a similar effect by using the waistcoat stitch. If you’re new to Tunisian crochet I’d recommend the video tutorials by The Crochet Crowd. Make sure to use a bigger hook than normal for Tunisian crochet and try not to worry if your crochet curls, this yarn can be lightly steam blocked to finish.
My finished cowl measures flat 10x4 inches (20 inches around) Simply increase the number of chains to make a longer scarf
To make your cowl you will need:
1x100g King Cole Stripe DK- pictured in (4509) Red Stripe
6mm Tunisian Crochet hook
Darning needle and scissors
Abbreviations:
Ch- chain
Dc- UK double crochet
Rev Dc- reverse double crochet
St(s)- stitch(es)
Ss- slip stitch
FwdP- forward pass
RetP- (return pass) ch1, *yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * until 1 loop remains
Tks- (Tunisian knit stitch)
Note:
The cowl is made using 1 flat piece of Tunisian crochet. Slip stitch or sew to join the side seam. I added a row of double crochet along both edges to help make it lie flat, followed by 1 row of optional reverse double crochet/crab stitch to finish
Using 6mm Tunisian hook
Ch74
1. Starting in second chain from hook, (insert in next ch, yarn over and pull up a loop) to end, (74 loops on hook) RetP across. 74 sts
2. FwdP in tks (skip first stitch, *insert hook between front and back vertical bars, yarn over and pull up a loop; repeat until the last stitch, work last stitch under 2 side loops (74 loops on hook) RetP across. 74 sts
Repeat as in row 2 until it measures approx 3 inches (before blocking) I worked a total of 20 rows
Next Ch1, dc in each st of top edge, keeping RS facing turn work 90 degrees clockwise then join the 2 short edges together with loose slip stitches, turn 90 degrees clockwise again and work another row of dc around the bottom edge.
Lastly work 1 row of rev dc (crab stitch) along both edges
To finish weave in all ends and gently steam to block
