I was recently gifted some lovely soft chenille style chunky yarn and immediately set about finding the perfect project for it. The loop stitch works perfectly for this type of yarn. It's super soft and squidgy making it ideal for a statement cushion, this method would work great for a rug too.
The loop stitch gives a really nice textured effect that works up quickly in a chunky yarn. It's worked using alternating single crochet rows which creates a neat smooth side. The loops can be made shorter or longer and can also be trimmed when finished to give a fun 'long pile' look. Read on to find out how I made my loopy square and circle cushions
To make a simple square cushion I used 2x100g of the James C Brett Flutterby Chunky yarn in cream with a 7mm hook, you can substitute this for any yarn you like, just adjust the hook size and chain length as necessary
I made a small 12x12 inch square cushion but any size square or rectangular cushion pad would work perfectly
Pattern notes are written in US terms. The chain 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch. I've included a couple of useful links to help with some of the stitches. We'll be crocheting one large piece to cover both sides of the cushion, them seaming at the end, super simple!
1. make a chain slightly shorter than the width of your cushion pad.
eg. chain 31, single crochet in 2nd loop from the hook and along the length of the chain =30 st and measures approx 12inches
You could also make a foundation single crochet chain, just keep going until you get the correct length needed for your cushion. This video by Alexis Middleton explains how to do it really easily
2. chain 1 and turn, work the next row using the loop stitch, starting in the very first sc from the previous row and continue in each stitch = 30 st
3. chain 1 and turn, work sc in each stitch along =30
Continue working one row of loop stitch (wrong side) and one row of sc (right side) until the piece is long enough to fold over and cover the whole of your cushion pad, ending on a final row of single crochet.
I worked a total of 69 rows, 34 rows of loops and 35 single crochet
After the final row, don't fasten off. Fold the work in half (with the loops on the outside) and slip stitch the left hand seam together working all the way down to the corner. Fasten off
Re join the yarn to the bottom right corner and slip stitch the sides together
Insert the cushion then slip stitch along the top. Fasten off and weave in the ends
You can also use this stitch to make a circle cushion. I made this one using the Flutterby yarn in fondant with a 6mm hook. This pattern is worked in the round in a continuous spiral so use a stitch maker to help keep track of the rows.
My cushion has a diameter of 12inches. I didn’t have a circular cushion pad handy so quickly made one using some old material and toy stuffing. Simply cut out 2 x 12 inch circles of material with a 2cm seam allowance and stitch together, leave a small gap to insert the stuffing. Turn right side out, fill and stitch.
When working in a continuous round like this I put a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round so it’s clear where the row ends. No need to single crochet between each row as we aren’t turning the work
Written in us terms, ls=loop stitch
Make 2:
1. Chain 3 and slip stitch to 1st chain to make a loop, chain 1 (doesn’t count as a stitch) and work 7 sc into the ring =7 st
2. 2x ls in each stitch around =14
3. *ls in next stitch, 2x ls in next stitch, repeat =21
4. *ls in next 2 stitches, 2x ls, repeat =28
5. *ls in next 3, 2x ls, repeat =35
6. *ls in next 4, 2x ls, repeat =42
7. Ls in each stitch =42
8. *ls in next 5, 2x ls, repeat =49
9. Ls in each stitch =49
10. *ls in next 6, 2x ls, repeat =56
11. Ls in each stitch =56
12. *ls in next 6, 2x ls, repeat =63
13. Ls in each stitch around =63
14 *ls in next 7, 2x ls, repeat =70
15. Ls in each stitch =70
Slip stitch in next stitch along to finish, faster off and weave in ends
After completing the 2nd circle do not fasten off. Slip stitch the 2 pieces together by sandwiching them together with the right side out and slip stitch though the back loops only, insert the cushion pad and continue slip stitching around. Fasten off and weave in the end to finish
Now enjoy your new loopy soft cushion! Let me know if you enjoy making these, the loop stitch is so fun to work with!
